North Dakota allows eligible drivers to reduce points on their driving records by completing an approved defensive driving course. A separate option lets qualifying drivers take a course instead of receiving points for certain traffic violations. Insurance discounts follow different rules set by insurers. Before choosing a defensive driving class online, check which option fits your situation.
An approved online course can reduce a driver’s point total by three points once every 12 months. To qualify, the course must appear on NDDOT’s approved-provider list. After completing it, the driver must submit the certificate to Driver Record Services. The reduction lowers the point total, but the underlying violations remain on the driving record.
Drivers with 12 or more points face a suspension lasting seven days for each point above 11. For drivers under 18, cancellation begins at six points. An approved three-point reduction may help an eligible driver lower their total before reaching the suspension threshold. If driving privileges have already been suspended or canceled because of points, the reduction will not take effect until that period ends. Check your driving record and confirm course eligibility with NDDOT before relying on this option.
North Dakota allows drivers with certain noncriminal traffic violations carrying five points or fewer to take an approved driver training course instead of having points added to their record. This alternative disposition is separate from the voluntary three-point reduction, and it has strict deadlines.
Under the state’s court guidance, you must post bond and notify the Clerk of Court that you are choosing this option within 14 days of the citation date. You then have 30 days from notifying the clerk to complete an approved course and submit your certificate to NDDOT. You generally cannot use this option if you have used it within the previous 12 months. Confirm the requirements with the court handling your citation and make sure the course is approved before enrolling.
The online format lets you study at your own pace and take the final exam when you’re ready. ETS Traffic School offers an online course with a digital completion certificate. However, its eligibility for North Dakota’s three-point reduction needs confirmation because ETS does not appear on NDDOT’s current approved online course list. Contact NDDOT before enrolling if you intend to use the course for point reduction. Completing a course alone does not guarantee that points will be removed.
A three-point reduction lowers the total on your driving record, but the underlying violation remains. It does not cancel the ticket fine. Insurance savings are a separate issue, so check with your insurer to find out whether completing an eligible course affects your premium.
Your next step depends on whether you want to reduce existing points or avoid points from an eligible citation. Check the relevant deadlines with the court if you are pursuing the second option. For point reduction, confirm that your chosen course appears on NDDOT’s approved list before paying for enrollment.
